City of Allentown

Allentown Arts ParkThe largest of Lehigh Valley’s three cities, Allentown, is a city not afraid to reinvent itself. From iron to silk, manufacturing to service, Allentown and its residents have learned to adapt to the ever-changing times.

The downtown is celebrating a rebirth as older buildings are refurbished and new stores and restaurants are opening. An arts community is being also reinvigorated and there’s a return of the city’s nightlife.

People are drawn to Allentown by its extensive park system – Allentown boasts more park space per capita than any other city its size in the nation – and attractive historic residential buildings in walkable neighborhoods. Old Allentown, West End Theatre District and Seventh Street Corridor are only a few of the vibrant, diverse neighborhoods.

Five fun facts about the city:
1. The Liberty Bell was hidden in Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ from 1777 to 1778 to save it from the British.
2. The United States’ oldest civilian concert band is the Allentown Band.
3. The Allentown Halloween Parade, established in 1905, is the oldest Halloween parade in the United States.
4. Allentown is nicknamed “Band City USA” because of its four city-supported bands.
