Developer Sought for Bushkill Creek Corridor Revitalization Project

5/31/06

LEHIGH VALLEY, PA – May 31, 2006 – The Easton Redevelopment Authority (ERA) is requesting qualifications from real estate development firms interested in redeveloping a former industrial complex in Easton, PA.  The reuse of the 14-acre site, which is comprised predominantly of the former Simon Silk Mill, Hogtown Distillery, and Moon Industries properties along North 13th Street, is part of a three-phased project aimed at revitalizing the Bushkill Creek Corridor through the City.

With immediate access from Route 22, the redevelopment of this site will further enhance the many favorable attributes the City of Easton already has – a growing art district, thriving restaurant community and nightlife, the renowned State Theatre, the prestigious Lafayette College, and a balanced atmosphere of business and residential communities.  The property would be suited for rezoning to a mix of commercial, recreational and residential development uses.

“The selection of a master developer for the 13th Street area is a crucial part of our redevelopment plans.  We look forward to working through a strong public-private partnership to support the selected developer in their efforts to revitalize these properties.” says Barbara Kowitz, Executive Director of ERA.

In addition to the redevelopment of the properties along North 13th Street, ERA and its partners will also be developing a recreational trail along the Bushkill Creek from the Delaware River to 13th Street and facilitating various revitalization projects along North 3rd Street.   The City of Easton was awarded $9 million through the State’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to support the Corridor-wide revitalization efforts.

Lafayette College is spearheading the 3rd Street revitalization efforts and has already invested over $9 million in the area.  Diane Elliott, Director for Public Service with Lafayette College’s Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government noted, “Lafayette is committed to working with the City and its partners to encourage economic development, promote tourism, attract residents, and showcase Easton’s natural treasures.  The Bushkill Creek Corridor work is a great example of these efforts.”

Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L) has taken the lead on developing the trail, the western terminus of which will be located near 13th Street.  “The Bushkill Creek is a hidden gem in the City and we look forward to helping make this urban greenway a true asset for City residents and visitors.” says Bill Mineo, Stewardship and Trails Manager with D&L.

Other partners on the project include Northampton County, who is helping to fund roadway improvement and trail development work, and the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, who is supporting environmental assessment work at the various former industrial sites.

More information about the project and the process to select a master developer for the 13th Street site are available by logging on to the City’s website at www.easton-pa.gov, and following the Planning Department link to the ERA website.  Copies of the Request for Qualifications can be obtained by contacting ERA at 610-250-6721.
