Created by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Keystone Innovation Zones (KIZs) are designated areas that foster entrepreneurial growth.
The Southside Bethlehem KIZ has created a “Knowledge Neighborhood” centered around Lehigh University and Northampton Community College. By funding Technology Transfer mini-grants to fledgling entrepreneurs, the Southside Bethlehem KIZ, has bridged the gap from concept to reality, serving as a national model for innovation and entrepreneurial development programs. The KIZ has received the Excellence in Partnership Development awards from both the University Economic Development Association and the International Economic Development Council. These awards speak to our programming success in the Lehigh Valley.
Technology businesses located within a KIZ have access to a wealth of resources including labs and research centers at both Lehigh University and Northampton Community College, private businesses, banks and economic development agencies designed to offer all manner of assistance to budding entrepreneurs. Since 2004 the KIZ has assisted 56 startup and early stage businesses. With the PI Commercialization Center and the TechVentures facilities located inside the KIZ, a true entrepreneurial community has flourished.
