Lilly’s Record $3.5B Investment Puts Lehigh Valley in Global Spotlight

When The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Reuters, and The Associated Press all cover the same announcement, it’s a signal the story matters.

On Jan. 30, those major media outlets, along with state and local media, and trade publications carried the news that Eli Lilly and Company selected the Lehigh Valley to build a $3.5 billion pharmaceutical-making facility where 850 people will work. It is the largest life sciences investment in Pennsylvania and the largest single economic development project in the Lehigh Valley.

The project opens a new chapter in the Lehigh Valley’s long manufacturing story. From the Moravians who established America’s first industrial parks to Bethlehem Steel, once the world’s No. 2 steelmaker, the Lehigh Valley’s manufacturing legacy is entering a new era where medicine plays a critical role.
