Tyber Medical is being acquired as part of a merger that will create a medical device supplier positioned to accelerate innovation and help improve standards of care for patients globally. The orthopedic device manufacturer will continue operating in the Lehigh Valley.
“We are excited to continue to grow in the Lehigh Valley and expect this merger to create additional opportunity for our company and community,” Founder and CEO Jeff Tyber said.
Tyber Medical provides rapid access to implants for the spinal, extremity, and trauma markets. It relocated to Hanover Township, Northampton County, from New Jersey in 2015 and has since expanded and increased its workforce. The company is a key partner in multiple Lehigh Valley regional economic development initiatives.
Montagu, a private equity firm with expertise in health care, announced on Jan. 13 it had entered an agreement to acquire Tyber Medical and combine it with Resolve Surgical Technologies and Intech.
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Tyber. While all three businesses are successful and growing, combining together will further accelerate the growth potential of each company, forming a larger scale organization to drive stronger opportunities for the business and our employees,” Tyber said. “The combination will also significantly benefit our customers through delivering accelerated innovation, depth and breadth of product and capabilities, increased speed to market, greater supply chain simplicity, and an expanded international footprint to better serve leading medical technology companies.”
The Lehigh Valley is home to more than 170 life sciences business establishments – manufacturing facilities, labs, research centers, offices, and distribution centers – that employ more than 6,000 people.
“Life sciences is a key business sector for the Lehigh Valley, one that has been targeted for growth by Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC),” said Kristin Cahayla-Hoffman, LVEDC’s Vice President of Business Development and Attraction. “The sector has grown by about 50% over the last decade with the addition of innovators such as Tyber Medical, a valued partner in regional workforce development programs.”
The planned merger involving Tyber Medical is subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
“The combined entity will offer a unique mix of proprietary market-cleared technologies, and development and manufacturing scale, that will enable its OEM customers to achieve unmatched speed to market and improve the resiliency and effectiveness of their supply chain,” Montagu said in a news release. “At the time of the merger, the platform will be a leading contract supplier of systems for spine, trauma, extremities, sports medicine, and enabling technologies, with plans to expand its pioneering innovation-led model into additional markets. The planned merger will support accelerated innovation and help improve standards of care for patients globally.”
“Tyber Medical’s proven track record of successful global launches, averaging 12 months from signing to launch, has revolutionized how our partners expand their portfolios and adapt to the evolving market dynamics. This strategic combination brings together the size, scale, and expertise of Intech, along with Resolve’s deep knowledge in the spine and cardiothoracic fields. We are delighted to be partnering with Montagu, a leading investment firm in the private label OEM sector, and we share their vision of creating an industry champion,” Tyber said.
Resolve Surgical Technologies designs, develops, and manufactures metal and polymer implants and instruments serving the orthopedics, spine, and cardiothoracic markets. Intech produces surgical implants, instruments, cutting tools, handles, and sterilization containers.
Tyber Medical is a member of the Industrial Training and Education Consortium of the Lehigh Valley (iTEC), a partnership of industry, education, government, and community organizations that promotes careers in advanced manufacturing through apprenticeships.
The company has partnered with LVEDC on regional workforce development initiatives, including the Education and Talent Supply Council and the Lehigh Valley Internship Summit.
